About The Artwork
Iconic film composer and musician Vangelis passed away on 19th May, 2022. On reading his obituary on the NPR website, I was immediately inspired to make a portrait as a tribute to the remarkable man. At 6x10in the work is small, and Vangelis' face occupies a good part of the paining creating an immediate intimacy with the audience. I went for an impressionistic colour scheme, while using classical drawing technique to achieve a good likeness, so that the work glows with the energy and passion of the musician while bringing him unmistakably into the presence of the viewer.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours.
