"Understanding Corollary" Painting

I use paintbrushes, stencils, and industrial tools to make oil on canvas and acrylic on wood paintings. And though I use mechanical, intentional, and accidental modes of paint application, my work entails a genuine exploration of form and content—form and content that is both conceptual and concrete. Throughout the course of making my paintings, I look for clues and prompts within each piece to retain its history and inform its creation. This insures that willpower alone will not dictate its appearance. For, as Lao Tzo said, “Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power.” Although my paintings reflect discovery and affirmation, they entail more than the action and responses that produce them. Not only physically, but conceptually as well. Sometimes a chance mark reveals assurance. Sometimes an intentional mark is less apparent. Regardless, each stroke embodies integrity and utility. Thus, the paintings are a candid realization of egalitarian worth. Forms and passages are not reworked or manipulated to appear seamless. Instead, new forms and passages are added to existing areas to resolve and clarify the paintings. Indeed, each painting’s components are preserved, making them a vital constituent of a larger whole.
