About The Artwork
II am drawn to places where people gather, and ideas of creative environments and placemaking that have become popular in recent years. I think about how central the common café has been to thought and culture: Marx and Engels first met in a café, Jonathan Larson’s RENT took place in a cafe inspired by where he wrote, J. K. Rowling created the first Harry Potter book in an Edinburgh café, and on and on…. They are natural places of un-planned dynamism, reflection, and inspiration, often leading to collaborations that would not have occurred if not for a space to gather. This coffee shop, Five Watt Coffee in South Minneapolis, is part of that long line of creative space and cultivation. This one really kicked me in the butt several times for all the details and layers and reflections needed to bring it alive.

I'm a Twin Cities based visual artist with a studio in the Northeast Minneapolis arts district located in the Casket Arts Building. I create both figurative and abstract works mainly in oil and ink with a focus on strong light and contrasting light effects. I like to create environments in my paintings that tell a story and create a mood or emotion, often eliciting feelings of calm, nostalgia, and wonder.
