About The Artwork

I regard the paintings that I did in this period of 2020 as the transition from the more figurative work that I did in the past to the 'abstract' work that I am currently doing. It also marked the beginning of the shift from working on canvas to recycled found materials such as cardboard and later wood. Initially I would cover the surface rapidly, often using leftover paint on my pallet after which I proceeded to observe and allow the forms to 'speak' to me in order to extract some kind of figurative subject. I called this work "The Meeting" firstly because it seemed to me that the two figures which emerged are having some kind of contractual discussion and secondly because at the time I thought of the painting as a meeting between abstractive and figurative painting. As with my other paintings I would want the viewers to find their own meaning within the work.

‘Once I finish a work it may remind me of a cavernous landscape, the night sky with stars and galaxies, or an underwater scene, although to someone else it might evoke something completely different like a microscopic view of an insect, an aerial photograph of the earth or an alien landscape. I enjoy the fact that these paintings can be interpreted differently depending on the viewer, hence they are not static but have potentiality for change depending on who is looking. I believe they hover between abstraction and figuration and it is this space which I seek to explore in my work.’ Filippo Francocci was born in 1974 in Città di Castello, Italy. When he was 2 years of age his family moved to South Africa where he grew up and obtained a BA in Fine Arts from Wits University in Johannesburg. After his degree he moved to Europe and lived in London and Rome. He now lives and works on the Costa Brava in Spain.
