About The Artwork
This oil pastel drawing, 'The Calling', is inspired by my fascination with lush kelp forests and serene underwater seascapes. I hope the viewers feel the same peaceful optimism I felt creating this drawing and that I now feel as a viewer myself. I chose to use oil pastels because it's not my strongest medium and I wanted a challenge. As the image came to life, my confidence with the medium grew. This coincides with the bright, bold colors. The woman is journeying through the kelp forest as I, the artist, went on this journey with a new medium. I chose to intensify the saturation of the image to comment on surrealism while still having a grasp on reality, or photorealism.
