I love to watch the elegant, fluid motion of koi and the calm feeling it gives me. The medium I use is particularly suited to express this quality. It is a dye made specifically for painting on silk which flows off the end of my brush in a graceful spread of color. When one wet flow of color meets another, darker, more intense, textural edges result which can be made to suggest water. When the work requires the controlling of color (such as containing the dye in the form of a fish body) a linear resist is used to keep the dye from wicking into other areas of the silk. I love the juxtaposition of the encouragement of the dyes fluid properties and the containment of dye to create an image. The layering of color and the texturing of dye on the fish begin to create the shape but it is when I paint an eye or two that the fish come alive for me. I began painting on silk after I watched an artist demonstrate silk painting and it made my heart beat stronger and took my breath away.

I am the daughter of an erudite, artistic, city-loving father whose career took him to rural Colorado. His father was an electrician who wired the authentic Buddhist temple in San Jose's Japantown. As a boy, my father accompanied his Dad on frequent work trips to the temple and he developed warm relationships with the adults he met there. This began a life-long love of Japanese culture for my father who passed it on to his children, including me. In my childhood, weekend trips to Denver included visits to Japanese markets, art exhibits, or a visit to Mrs's Noda's house where my father took Japanese brush painting classes. As a teenager I began a life-long study of Japanese textile design. From there, my fascination with koi seen on many trips to Japanese gardens became a focus of many paintings on silk.
