About The Artwork

This artwork was made with oils and gold leaf on canvas. I envisioned this artwork after viewing a hidden Black Santa holding a White doll created sometime around the late 1920's. This particular piece of artwork was recently exhibited in the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park and was just accepted for a juried exhibit, "Migration 61" at Busboys and Poets in honor of artist, Jacob Lawrence who created the famed Migration series relating to the migration North of Black African Americans searching for freedom, equality, work, security, and safety. Jacob Lawrence's "Great Migration" series of 60 panels will be exhibited in Washington DC, in The Phillips Collection, OCT 8, 2016 - JAN 8, 2017. As part of its socially engaged mission and practice, Busboys and Poets presents #Migration61, an exhibition that asks, “What would the 61st panel of Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series look like today?” The exhibit will be October 15, 2016 until March 5, 2017 at all six locations. Most common stores sell only White Santas, so I thought it would be nice to offer a Santa that black children could relate to and that would help teach tolerance and love, respect, and consideration for one another. White Santa Claus images have always flooded the Western Hemisphere and those images relayed that there is and was plenty for White folks. My black Santa Claus, hopefully tells children and people, that there is enough and plenty for black folks or any ethnic minority as well and there is equality of people, no matter what color, race, religion, gender, economic standing, or belief system. This is my hope. This Santa Claus has a huge toy bag filled with gifts and goodies intended for all. He has enough to share and give. The toys on top are varied ethnicities, revealing that kids deserve play and all the treasures life has to offer. This goes for adults as well. He has a never ending gift bag that reaches out beyond the canvas. In his right hand he holds a large black baby doll. I am hoping that this image tells people that they deserve the good in life, to be able to earn, have, live well, and be included in the wonderful joys of life. Santa's bag has many gifts, including the gift of the spirit, hope, answers to many baffling questions, healing, and you help fill this bag with your positive thoughts and wishes so that everyone can partake in the gifts of life. "Santa's Wish - Civil Rights Santa Claus" is a piece of artwork made during the BlackLivesMatter Movement of the 21st Century.

Debbie Davidsohn won her first major award in high school when her art teacher entered her artwork in an International high school contest. She won for her drawing and self portrait. In the late 90s, LACMA invited her to display her wooden painted pieces art. She had created a line of faux finished designer wood pieces with intricate paintings on each one, all now either sold or given as gifts. Debbie also has created a multitude of designed art for the store, The Liberty Dog Store, the Serenity merchandise line, and constructed costumes and fashion designs for various rock & pop stars. Debbie is one of America's best kept secrets. She has been sung about by famous rock and pop stars for decades. She has been involved with the music industry, film industry, and also serviced three major US Presidents and their staffs. Very famous rock stars are in possession of some of her original works (not shown here) and she has a large history of multi-talent that spans a good portion of the artistic world on various levels; film, stage, music videos, stage backdrops, sculpture, music, choreography, dance, and musicianship. Some of her artwork was on display a number of times in LA, Lancaster Art gallery, The Crystal Cathedral in Hollywood, and through a large multitude of online venues. Debbie has also performed on stage, been chosen for National and International TV commercials, bit roles, stage plays, and is a multi winner from the Southern California Motion Picture Counsel. In college she was awarded with High Honors, achievement plaques and a special award for 'Hometown Humanitarian' award for her services to soldiers stationed in Afghanistan during America's crisis.
