A few years ago I was standing next to my partner in a gallery in Adelaide, in front of a very large contemporary aboriginal painting, which blended the traditions of aboriginal painting with something more straightforwardly artistic. He began to sway. And I thought "that's interesting... I wonder if I could make him fall over". And so began a process of exploration of how the combination of colours and textures within the simplest two dimensional shapes (a rectangle of canvas and a lot of smaller circles) could create a three dimensional space to boggle the eyes and confuse the brain. I use acrylics on cotton duck canvas, more as though they were watercolours or dyes than acrylics. The surface is fragile and beautiful, with the texture of the canvas readily apparent, and the images, which utilise interference paint, change depending on the lighting and the angle from which they are viewed.

Rachel McDonnell is an artist whose preoccupations include light, and our experiences of it, optical trickery, pattern and paying homage to the minutiae/neglected things of life through painting. Beyond that she has interests in philosophy, politics, feminism and the environment, amongst other things, all of which feed into her work. She tries to amalgamate thoughts and ideas about art and the world into something which draws the viewer in, and might lead them to appreciate the work as an object in itself, and also to think about both the work and its subject. She lives near Stroud in Gloucestershire with her partner and two children.
