Petro Park Painting

This piece was inspired by a location that my sister and I discovered during a roadtrip from the Bay Area to Portland, Oregon. Featured in the painting is a 20 year old Poplar tree growing through a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air. Based in Hopland, CA, the grounds are a part of the Solar Living Institute, which offer a 12-acre working demonstration of renewable energy, permaculture, and sustainable living along California’s historic Highway 101. The idea for the car grove came from the architect Sim Van der Ryn. He originally called it the ‘Memorial Car Grove’ or ‘Petro Pig Park’. The name ‘Petro Pig Park’ is a takeoff on those 1950’s muscle cars being ‘petro (as in petroleum) hogs’ as over the years we have referred to them. ‘Grow through cars’ was coined to differentiate them from the ‘drive through trees’ in Leggett. The concept was showing the fossil fueled muscle car monstrosities of the 1950s and how Nature will eventually bat last, but bat best and take them back over. The trees were planted in 1995 inside the cars as young as ½” in diameter and now they are taking over the cars.
