About The Artwork

I have studied and taught architecture as well as drawing and painting. My work is often identified as Minimal, but critics have said the works are full of meaning. This is the last piece in the long Windows series of rotating rectangles, overlapping to create a calm and beautiful order. It was on view for a LUX Design home in BelAir. The idea of a library was in my mind, where books are calmly read, was my inspiration.

Washington, USA. 1964. Claremont Graduate University, MFA; Painting & Sculpture, Claremont, Ca., Washington State University, BFA; Art and Architecture Kerwin lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work resides in the spontaneously perceptive areas of proportion and measurements found in a lineage including Reinhardt, McGlaughlin, Agnes Martin and her own. Kerwin’s geometric abstraction, with an emphasis on color harmonies and balance, takes a new beat with each exhibition. Kerwin uses a variety of media to achieve her goals for each painting, which include: oil, oil in high melt waxes, and acrylic. These paintings have been called by critics in L.A. "sexy", "passionate", and "surfaces to dream on". Her work has been in over 110 exhibitions and is collected internationally. *Occasionally, while making her geometric abstractions, cows may leap out, and some are pictured here. Kerwin’s early years were spent on an expansive, wilderness cattle ranch in the Olympic mountains of Washington state, USA.
