Mary Queen of Scots with Lord Darnley and baby future King James. Mary and Henry were married in 1565. Mary was brought up in France and Catholic. Scotland was a Protestant country. Henry (Lord Darnley) was a vain arrogant man, with a violent streak, aggravated by a drinking problem. He became envious of his wife's close friendship with her secretary David Rizzio, believing him to have made Mary pregnant, and is rumoured to have initiated the plot to have him murdered. Rizzio was stabbed 56 times on 9th March 1566. Darnley himself was later found murdered at Kirk o' Field in Edinburgh, where he had been staying with Mary. While she attended the wedding of one of her closest servants, two barrels of gunpowder were exploded beneath Darnley's sleeping quarters. His body was found outside, surrounded by a cloak, a dagger and his coat. Dressed only in his nightshirt, suggesting he had fled in some haste. He had died from strangulation. This bloody story supplies the narrative for "Losing My Religion". Mary's arm steeped in blood, the blood-red sunset, setting on her reign. The little person entering the picture on the right is myself as 'time traveller' witnessing the scene. The setting could be Loch Leven where Mary was imprisoned in 1567.
