The intent was allowing the imagination to wander deep in the deepest place below the ocean floor. What it might look like and feel like when light is brought down deep and firmly to feel the enormous energy forcing the eye to seek and discover...The portal to the unknown is peaceful. I hope the viewer can see something that maybe I didn't. Because in this effort, the longer the look the work I have done is relevant. The fact that oils are used here on canvas helped the job of getting the richness was also my intent.

An accomplished illustrator, painter, curator and educator, Al Johnson has been a professional artist all of his life. Even as a young artist, Mr. Johnson received the opportunity to be hired as a courtroom sketch artist for the famous Rubin Hurricane Carter trial. To the amazement of onlookers, the young artist was able to capture the expressions and emotions displayed in the courtroom. These gifts led Mr. Johnson to study at Pratt Art Institute, the Students Art League and at the Albert Pale School of Commercial Arts under the instruction of Jack Faragasso. Merging both talents of commercial and fine arts proved to develop into a signature art form for him.His vast endeavors are many including the rendering works of the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world, to the storyboard art for the Oscar winning film The Hours to the commissioned 7 foot portrait of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, permanently installed in Brooklyn Borough Hall and most recently, his commercial work viewed by millions, during the 2007 Super Bowl.Mr. Johnson has received invitations to exhibit his work internationally in such venues as the prestigious Tokyo Metropolitan Museum in Japan and the Susan Bentley Gallery in London. Thus, his fine art continues to be shown and collected internationally, as he continues to create new visions in the feature film, television and music video industry.
