Lacuna Painting

A lacuna is an unfilled space. But in this painting I am suggesting that space is filled with unseen elements which have an ongoing effect on the planet and in the definition of landscape. For many years I did not use black in my work. I then looked at Rembrandt's work in the Dulwich Picture Gallery. His blacks have a depth which contributes greatly to the emotion of his work, particularly his portraits. By using black in this work I am suggesting infinity and the unknown. The work evolved through my use of drafting tape to draw the initial stages of the work. In removing it while the paint is still wet the traces it leaves suggest unfilled spaces which become filled with paint as a metaphor for 'life'. As in the accidental happenings we all experience through life I allow the result to dictate how the painting moves to conclusion.
