The portraits of contemporary children are depicted in an iconographic setting that is reminiscent of medieval and early modern images of rulers. They wear crowns as the insignia of their royal ancestry. The clothing that they suggest indicates their aristocratic origins. As a result, they are removed from the contemporary perspective, they seem to come from another time. This distance creates distance, the people portrayed have nothing to do with the reality of the recipients. This strangeness can enable a different point of view that is more impartial and has nothing to do with one's own world of imagination. And on the other hand, the royal children look modern, they might just have got off the bus or they might have been neighbors' children. This strange dichotomy is reminiscent of our modern world, in which we have to fulfill various social roles and functions, beyond our "real" person. This distinction is clearly marked in the pictures by the cardboard-like crowns that are too big for the children or do not look “real”. The children look serious and thoughtful. With their direct looks they raise questions about childhood and human existence. Their direct look, the confrontation with the other person is actually a confrontation with the self, the own ego, putting the crown on yourself and at the same time feeling the burden of the self. Equally important is the joy of human beauty and the desire to depict and express this beauty
