This work is inspired by a reading of the biblical book of Jonah. It captures the moment when the prophet Jonah is abondoned to the sea and the great fish, in the belly of which he will remain for three days and nights. Jonah is regarded as a type or foreshadowing of Christ, his passion, death and three day passage through the afterworld. The painting is thus a meditation on self-abondonment.
