Greeting A Messenger’s composition is dominated by one heavy, dark, low hanging cloud. It is not unusual to see such a sight on the Great Plains. Clouds were at one time thought to be augeries hinting at future events. The native residents of the plains as well as the European Settlers looked to the sky for warnings of inclement or dangerous weather. I like the idea of looking to nature for warnings and the idea that all we need to take care of ourselves and our communities is written in the sky.

Warm and cool reds play off of of each other creating a vibrant, glowing effect as if the land itself is in the process of transfiguration.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
