She grew up on Dry Island, Badachro near Gairloch and attended Glasgow School of Art, graduating with a Bachelor of Art with Honours in Fine Art, specialising in photography in 1992. Sarah lived and worked in the United States from 1993 until 2015 when she returned to Scotland with her family.
