About The Artwork

This painting is a peaceful protest. Forest are fascinating, encasing ancient mysteries deep in their roots. When we look from a distance, we can hardly identify one tree from another. They all seem connected through their branches, leaves, colours. And yet, in reality, the connection is real. Beneath the ground, where our eyes cannot see, there is a fungi called mycorizae, which unites all the roots of the trees, helping them to share nutrients, water, or information. Therefore, when one tree experiences something, all the forest will be informed through this complex chain. In the past 200 years, humans completely changed Earth. Forests were cut down unsustainably, often leading to permanent consequences. Deforestation is one of the biggest threats the Earth's biodiversity, balance and life the way we know it. What we can see of a forest gives us only a small hint of what it truly is. When we see branches entwining with each other as they grow towards the sky, we can’t see that this is because their roots are connected under the ground. To express this, I used a mix of complementary colours to paint the interconnected lines of the branches. Yet, when one tree is cut in a forest, this complex network underneath them is broken as well, stopping trees from sharing resources with one another. Yet, the last thing they share is the stress that is felt when a tree is cut down. Therefore, all this symmetry I built in the upper side of the painting is broken by a white line which signifies a tree that was cut down. Just as trees are interconnected with another, so are all the animals that depend on the forests to survive. And so are we, who depend on the forests, animals and all the beings that surround us. In the end, humans are as fragile as any other being. By hurting forests, we are hurting ourselves too. This painting represents a mystical serenity that surrounds the forests and how that is broken by uncontrolled deforestation.
