Afterward, you can remove all traces of reality” Pablo Picasso As you may have noticed, I am increasingly drawn towards abstracting my recent landscapes and have been finding it an enjoyable challenge. This piece was commenced en plein air, along with a few other canvases, and was worked up over a number of variations and iterations in and out of the studio until it took some resolution in my eye as to what it might become, and then I cropped it down to it’s final shape. There is certainly something exciting about losing some or all of the form (drawing) in a painting, and letting the colour and chaos take over. It works for me, and judging by the reactions, it does for a number of you as well. However, like a lot of things, it ain’t as easy as it looks, and it takes the same amount of professional diligence and consideration as a carefully rendered academic piece does – sometimes even more so, as you are throwing some of the rules out, but still have to make it work as a painting with only your instinct to guide you, not a tape measure and a camera reference shot. Anyway, that’s my ‘two bob’s worth’ as they used to say when I was a lad! ?
