We are lucky enough to sometimes see these beautiful creatures in the woodland around Surrey, so naturally painting them in their magical surroundings is a must. I chose watercolour for this painting as it is translucent and can capture the illusive nature of the subject. It is double mounted in light ivory mount board, so will need a frame to hang it. The dimensions are... image size 16.5 x 12.25 inches and with the mount it is 24 x 20 inches.

My main motivation, if not absolute obsession, is light and light shining through trees in particular. Frequently my initial inspiration comes simply from gazing up at a light filled canopy with it's glinting flickering foliage and wonderful complex play of dappled light. To achieve this magical light show in my paintings, I have found that using many many layers of glazed paint and very carefully juxtaposed subtle changes of tone can bring out the depth of colour and glow, an illusion of luminosity and radiance. This is a very lengthy process however, a painting normally taking aprox 3 to 6 months to complete, but worth the time spent on it.
