About The Artwork

Inside the packaging will be included a printed sheet containing the narrative related to this canvas. That's the story behind "Boundaries" painting: Sahara – October 1987 “I have always hated yellow, it is a complicated colour to use: it covers little or does not cover at all. The perception of colour is however a personal, intimate fact. But as you know, enemies must be known better than friends, and so I will tell you about the desert. But I will not tell you about the heat, the sand and the camels, I will tell you about how fleeting the boundary of abandonment is. So in the end my search took me to the Sahara. Together with my guide I reached the edge of the desert, riding my camel with my faithful painting tools at my side. Making slow progress the guide led me to understand with a nod that he had to check the animal's leg, so I nodded back and slowly continued, focusing on the horizon. It took me a few minutes of lazy riding to lose sight of the guide behind a dune and find myself completely alone. All of a sudden I realized the unreality of the place, a sensation I had never experienced before. See, getting lost is an opportunity you come across along the way. I was facing this boundary without knowing what to do. On the one hand the fear of oblivion, on the other the curiosity of wanting to continue. It is like when we were children and eager to look further, risking where adults would not go. In essence, the choice is to cross the border: the boundary between infinity and civilization, between the known and the unknown where one's dominion has no power. Filled with this epiphany, I quickly descend from the camel, grab the easel, position the canvas and immortalize the yellow duality with color.”

Gambatesa's work is a synthesis of the light and color of a place. The artist dedicates his entire life to "travel" and makes it the main body of his painting practice. Gioacchino succeeds in making us realize that exploration is a private thing. In fact, each of us, experiencing the discovery of a place, actually discovers it for the first time, and the resulting feeling is the same as that experienced by ancient explorers, as if we were a modern-day Christopher Columbus. When we look at a work by Gioacchino Saltagrillo Gambatesa we observe the very personal emotion that the artist felt in discovering a place, a person, a situation. Let us, then, be inspired by those vibrant colors and light that these works emanate. Let us go there, into the place described by the title of the work, allowing ourselves five minutes of...meditation...
