Based on a photograph I took one afternoon in Pune, this painting captures the essence of the transformation of countryside into town. With all the popular areas in the city developed to their full extent all new development must occur in peripheral areas that have remained untouched. This is of course funded by the idea that suitable development will turn the periphery into the core, turn the new-fangled real estate into a place everyone will clamour to be. It's a boomtown alright. The truck with the cement mixer in the foreground is the focal point bringing the energy to the painting as well as to the thematic core of the work. The buildings receding into the blazing afternoon sun form a background that plays with the contrasting solidity of the nearer, hard-edged erections and the farther, softer-edged ones. This bright work would light up any room, whether it be a home office or a place of business.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours. Though watercolours are considered by some to be a poorer cousin of oil paint I believe this is an unfair and inaccurate view, encouraged on one hand by the demandingess and temperamental nature of the medium and on the other hand the enviable freshness and spontaneity it can bring to a composition in the hands of a master, In addition to my pursuit of visual art projects, I write nonfiction essays, and reviews for arts and culture website www.Middlebrowse.com
