This painting js inspired by the blueberry fields near my home in Maine, I am obsessed with the patterns I see in nature, patterns of harmony and discord both anatomical and behavioral. I notice the layers, the hierarchies, the paradoxes that coexist. These inform my relationship to my own species and to my natural and cultural environments. I see life as a landscape, however abstract, peopled or not, reflecting the dynamics of those relationships. I strive to make my paintings an almost animate reflection of our ecology, and to encourage the same illuminating examination. I am fascinated by what scientists call “crypsis”—the ability of an organism to avoid observation or detection by other organisms—and how it is used by prey and predator alike. Camouflage is one example with its own cultural connotations. Such hidden objects, intentions and agendas for individual and/or collective survival intrigue me. As an artist I contend with visibility and invisibility, with being or not being seen, and the concept of longevity, this landscape, this life.

Stephen was born in Philadelphia and moved multiple times throughout his youth including a five year period in Madrid Spain. In his early twenties he moved to Maine to apprentice as a wooden boat builder and quickly put down roots. “There’s a real appreciation for the artist and artisan here. It’s a true community.” Says Stephen of his adopted state. In his over thirty year residence in Maine he developed a reputation in his community for being a talented craftsman, a compassionate leader and an artist who always made time to paint. He has kept a studio and regular studio hours even while renovating his 1840 home in Rockport and managing the local boatbuilding yard Rockport Marine. “Painting is the thing that feeds me most, it ties my life together. Here in Maine there’s beauty and inspiration everywhere.”
