About The Artwork

The painting evokes and interprets the story in Greek mythology of Ariadne, the daughter of Pasiphae and king Minos of Crete. She falls in love with the Athenian hero Theseus, but according to one version of the story, she is abandoned by her lover on the island of Naxos. However, just as she laments her betrayal, she is rescued by, and marries, the god Dionysus. The leopard, in the form of a Benin statuette, is associated with this deity, a sign that lamentation will be transformed into festivity. The violin playing Ariadne suggests the ambivalent nature of music: its ability to express both ecstacy and melancholy in the same moment. The bird motif in the background ornamentation echoes that psychological/erotic process.
