About The Artwork
, Are Friends Electric? (2017), is based on the idea of non-human relationships. Inspired by the composition of Caravaggio’s Rest on the Flight Into Egypt (1597) it juxtaposes modern ‘virtual friends’, robots and online personae with the more traditional concepts of ‘non-human entities’ such as animals, trees, clouds and spirits on the other. In an age increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence, the work seeks to examine what we mean by “artificial”, and the boundaries we create between the virtual and the real.
