Subject: The New Cathedral, Cuenca, Ecuador Description: This work depicts the Entry to the New Cathedral in Cuenca Ecuador designed by Juan Bautista Stiehle and constructed from local marble and brick. The design of the cathedral uses the barrel arch throughout the building as structure, volume, and ornament, serving as a unifying motif that creates a harmonious relationship between its parts and pieces. The concentric arches that define this entry mediate the scale of the building from monumental and divine to human as you approach the door. This work is one of several works that represent different aspects of the New Cathedral complete with the intention that they can be paired up for display as a diptych or triptych. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
