About The Artwork

The work is a portrait commissioned by the daughter of Mrs. Shawl. Because of the impossibility of photographing or even meeting Mrs. Jentzsch in person, the drawing has been constructed as a montage of anatomical details like hair and hands, clothes, objects, jewels and the background. The only part of the portrait that actually belongs to Mrs. Jentzsch is the face. The commissioner wished to underline the Spanish origins of the mother´s family. Because of my particular interest in fashion items and antique pieces, I decided to introduce a Manila shawl. This is a traditional handmade and precious item, originally produced in China and imported to Spain. Nowadays Spain owns the rights to the Manila shawls. The link to China is subtly suggested by the Chines vase on the right side (Ming Dynasty). The abstracted wall carpet in the background belongs to an Art Deco Chines Carpet from the beginning of the 20th Century. Realization time: 2 to 3 weeks (including research for the missing part of the photo).
