About The Artwork
"Philosopher Woman" started out as a life drawing session. I drew the character in pencil. It was my best drawing that day. Then the drawing sat for a while. I finally had the idea to do something more with it recently. I spray-painted it so that the figure was almost entirely hidden behind the spray-paint. I then thought long and hard what I could draw in the empty space and I came up with a portrait of Socrates, based on a sculpture reference. With my unique technique, I used white-out for the highlights and a brush and ink for the dark shadows. The effect is a piece that at once beautiful, captivating, and unique.
