About The Artwork

My work is marked by an emphasis on the formal processes of painting and its capacity for ambivalence and allusion. Teasing certain aesthetic tropes and culturally engrained motifs of art- historical significance, I explore formalism via an interrogation of abstraction. In exploiting the physical, sensory associations of gestural painting, I question archetypal associations with what is regarded an inherently sensory, subjectively-led discipline, whereby the works offer themselves to a wider study of self-expression that is at once humorous and sincere. In this respect, I employ painting as a tool by which one is able to conceal certain references pertaining to an inherited visual conscious, one that is increasingly arbitrary and fragmented. Trappings of a Late Modernist vernacular recur and are toyed with, in an attempt to define a social language of painting one that traverses flippancy and wider communal application.

Felix Carr (b.1993) is known for his fluid, large scale paintings that blend dreamlike figurative elements with gestural abstraction to explore contemporary portrayals of the body. Conflating painting and writing, the artist engages with the linear tradition of paint, while simultaneously exploring its limits and potentiality, particularly in relation to poetry and language. Addressing diverse reference points from the art-historical canon through to the popular imaginary, he seeks to create a rounded appraisal of the experiential and the sensory. The artist lives and works in London, having graduated with a First Class Honours from the Glasgow School of Art in 2016, when the artist was selected to exhibit in the Royal Scottish Academy as part of Scottish New Contemporaries. Since then, he has exhibited throughout the UK and Europe, with solo shows in London, Lille, and Düsseldorf, with works housed in international collections. He is the recipient of The Steven Campbell-Hunt medal, as well as the Stevenston Painting Prize (RSA).
