About The Artwork
The strict, steady gaze of the Russian poet Majakowski has fascinated me for years. When a friend offered me to exhibit some protraits together, I started working on this one. In the end I exhibited only one portrait, that is of Majakowski. This portrait You see here is actually one element of a greater portrait, which includes five other "protraits" together with text elements, all in big format. which all together make up THE Majakowski-portrait. The other people who appear in this portrait of Majakowski are the sculptress and close friend of Majakowski Lilja Brik, a close friend of mine who is also a poet -alas, quite unknown! As I am- and myself. Through this work I started reading the work of Majakowski, who is mostly unknown in the western world. I am a painter, calligraphist and grafics artist, autodidact by choice. To earn my living I work as calligraphist for government institutions, international companies and private clients, and for film productions. For many years I worked as set-designer for feature films. I was born in Rome. Baroque art runs in my veins, so to speak. A good amount of talent in the arts was passed on to me by my family. During my childhood we traveled the world, thus I developed an affinity to different ancient civilizations, developing a taste for the decorative arts and for the Mid-European expressionism.
