The black teardrops show the Japanese Kanji characters for the numbers 4 and 9. These two numbers are considered unlucky in Japan since they are homophones of the word for death (shi) and suffering (ku), respectively. In Japan, we traditionally mourn the dead for 49 days. After this we pray for their safe journey towards reincarnation. Incidentally, the Japanese onomatopoeia for sobbing is "shiku shiku." The white teardrops contain the Kanji character for tear (namida). Her feelings of sadness toward death and suffering mix together in the bowl to become tears. The subject was done in marker and silver gel pen with pen outlines, with the background done in Faber Castell Gelatos "watercolor chalk" pigment in Satellite.

babypoppp@gmail.com Born 1976 in Saitama, Japan Moved to Los Angeles 1985 I'm a Japanese citizen and resident of Los Angeles. My ideas usually come out of dreams, daydreams, random misheard or overheard things, occasional hallucinations and shapes on walls. The older I get, the further away from realism my concepts get. I feel like I'm trying to escape from reality, but I also already feel free through my ideas as they take shape on paper, canvas or whatever. It is definitely a form of therapy.
