About The Artwork

In this painting/collage, I intended to express my desire to be free - letting go of some things and thoughts, and even fall without any inhibition whatsoever. In my practice, it is almost impossible to be completely spontaneous especially during the earlier stage of process, as it is unfeasible to spontaneously place and glue layers of paper; instead, it is ordinarily very intentional as to where and how I place the layers of paper. In this piece, however, I attempted to place them as unintentionally as possible to see and feel the freedom, as if I were painting with much more malleable medium such as water color or acrylic, throughout the creation of this work. Other than the process of randomly placing and gluing the paper, the process remains the same: once layers are dried, they are ripped from the top one by one, creating lines and marks throughout the painting/collage.

Young makes abstract paintings with paper. At the core of her practice, she explores the concept of impermanence as it relates to life, and the beauty of such mercuriality and unpredictability embedded in the life form. Techniques and process are key to expressing her intention as she unearths the essence of the theme of ephemerality by peeling away colored paper that was first meticulously layered and copiously built up. She is inspired by this process of building and removing intricate layers in order to reveal what is underneath and between – birthing something entire new from the ashes of destruction. In her body of work, melding her past experiences and passion together, Young combines elements from art, design, and craft. Young received her BA in Philosophy from Occidental College, and post graduate studies in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design. Her paintings have been exhibited and placed by galleries and collectors throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
