This second work in the sunflower series explores and rearranges the elements of the original ‘Sunflowers’ inspired artwork. This cardboard piece was built over a cardboard canvas that allowed me to break the surface; the elements of the picture are extruding and recessing into the viewing plan. All the sunflower elements are cut, folded, and covered to make a variety of spaces and volumes. The work is embedded in a golden cardboard collage of segments made from the cardboard ‘cutting mat’ I have cut on top of while sitting on the floor of my garage. It records the handmade, individual and spontaneous journey of the work; far away from machine-based laser cut mass consumerist produced paper cutting processes. Each sunflower segment has hundreds of hand-drawn 5 bar number tallies written onto them. I was inspired to write these number tallies through the shortest days of the year. I was conscious of the passing of time and how precious and value filled this feeling was; moving away from superficial reasoning and rewards that we tell ourselves to give us value and meaning. The work has an appearance like something you may see in palaeontology, it seemed to suggest objects emerging from golden sands, things that were lost being rediscovered. At this time, I watched my youngest son making multiple brilliant felt tip drawings on paper and was reminded how his creativity is made using simple materials, while feeling the pull, allure and pressure of the digital age. I went and brought some cheap felt pens for the lids and embedded them in to the sculpture to represent this feeling of the passing of time and changing nature of creativity. I noticed that the pen lids looked like bullet shell casings. From the early energies of youth, we are pushed towards routines; physical, psychological and technology based, that make us look up for the ‘new’ best thing, we forget to look at where we came from and what is important.

I work with the medium of cardboard to create large scale 3D sculptural pieces. I've been working with this medium since I became a right leg amputee over 20 years ago. The accessibility of working with cardboard allows me to create sculptures in smaller sections that can be assembled into a large scale piece. This journey of working with cardboard has created an accessible method that I have been able to teach when working with others.
