This is the last in a series of large collage on canvas works produced in the Spring and Summer of 2018 here in my Paris studio. This work brings together the themes I've been working on for many years and it is titled Birds & Brides indicating how longing and the desire contrasts with reality and failure. In between there are many words, soft breezes, insane conundrums of culture and history. There's the male gaze and the male point of view contrasted with a roving and powerful female presence often subjugated by male blindness and stupidity. I know, I'm a male. So in a way this piece is a confession. It is in my mind one of the best works I've pulled together, but who knows? Thanks for looking. MATTHEW ROSE lives and works in Paris, France. https://john-strauss-furniture.myshopify.com/collections/matthew-rose Known widely for his collage works and wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor installations, he graduated from Brown University (1981) with a degree in Semiotics/Linguistics. Influenced by Americans Ray Johnson, Jasper Johns, Joseph Cornell and a handful of French surrealists, Rose works late hours ripping apart paper and bits of text to remake contemporary life into a specific, yet unbound book, what the artist calls his “theory of everything.” "Most of my work involves collage; I cut and paste in all flavors. But I draw, paint, sculpt, find, assemble and put together words as well. I'm always working, I never close." CURRENTLY: Published Coronaville. A graphic novella about the Trump Pandemic.
