About The Artwork

Photography taken on a journey to Bolivia, in a old train cemetery near the famous salt lake called Uyuni. This image represents a part of an abandonned train, but for me it recalls one of the most powerfull mexican gods, the god of the rains, he was also by extension a god of fertility and of water. During Aztec times, Tlaloc’s cult was considered extremely important and had spread throughout Mexico.

Having discovered photography later in life, Nadja Massun has produced a richly diverse body of work within the last fifteen years. The core of this work is perhaps best evidenced, however not limited to, the portraits of her daughters. Through the maternal lens by which Massun captures her daughters, she invites us into her private world, sharing intimate and personal moments. However, it is a testament to the originality of her artistic vision that Massun’s images often transcend any specific time and place. Throughout the history of the medium, a plethora of legendary photographers, ranging from Henri Cartier-Bresson to Graciela Iturbide, have been drawn to and inspired by Oaxaca – its culture, history, people and land. With the core of her photographic practice based in her adopted home of Oaxaca, Massun’s photographic practice both continues this tradition and yet also breaks from it. While incorporating aspects of this predominantly documentary photographic tradition into her practice, it is perhaps more important to reflect upon how Massun has pioneered a new direction, forging a photographic practice that is distinctively her own. Drawing inspiration from classic narratives such as Alice in Wonderland and The Little Prince, Massun invites her viewers to engage with and reflect upon the worlds of their own imaginations. She is also currently putting together a documentary film on the transmission of traditional music and dance to younger generations in the Hungarian communities of Transylvania.
