About The Artwork

Towards the end of 1922, in Puebla de los Ángeles ,Mexico a series of unusual events occurred that provoked the expectation and astonishment of the population. A man, Babe White, of probable Irish descent, announced what clearly seemed a series implausible acts. He would ascend, or, rather, free climb, for fourteen days consecutive days, one of the imposing 70 meter high towers of Puebla’s cathedral. He would then skywalk to the second tower before coming down. Every day for fourteen days. This peculiar story began on March 18, 1922, when the Daily Newspaper of the Capital of the Republic, "El Demócrata", announced the arrival of Babe White and Blanche Douglas at the St. Francis Hotel, from New York. That date marked the beginning of what we could well call his great Mexican adventure. The events took place in several of the most important capitals of our country. He climbed, in Mexico City, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Post Office and YMCA Buildings, the Regis Hotel and the interior of the Virginia Fábregas Theater. In Jalisco, the Church of Zapopan, and, in Guadalajara, the Famous 33. In Monterrey, the Cathedral and the Tower of the Cuauhtémoc Brewery Building. Fortunately, Guillermo Robles Callejo was there, in Puebla, prepared with his Ica-Polyscop, German, stereoscopic camera. The image presents one of the moments, in which the Fly Man executes what some journalists called the "Niagara Pass": the brave and reckless act of crossing, on a thin steel cable, without protective net, from tower to tower of the Cathedral of Puebla de Puebla de los Ángeles.
