About The Artwork
Pain de seigle from Parisian boulangerie Poilâne. Pain de seigle is a rye bread which is different from traditional American ryes in that it contains no caraway seeds. It always has a darker, crispier outer crust, with a soft almost doughy texture inside, and is one of my favorite breads in France. Boulangerie Poilâne was founded in 1932 by Pierre Poilâne, and still exists at the same address, 8 Rue du Cherche-Midi, in the 6th arrondissement. Today it is owned and operated by Pierre’s granddaughter, Apollonia. The original was created in oil pastel on acid free 250g A5 paper.

This experience launched his most recent collection documenting bread from different boulangeries around the city, which debuted in 2021. In addition to creating fine art for over 30 years, Benjamin has worked in film and photography, as well as in fashion as a self-taught shoemaker. His current collection is inspired by our connection to history, culture, craftsmanship, and to each other through an everyday object - bread. This has also inspired further steps to connect with international social justice organizations which focus on food waste and access to quality food.
