About The Artwork

My work is expressed through lines. It distances itself from the actual world. The "Line," among others, has been a means and messenger of expressing "my being free". It has various forms, sometimes a round one, and a straight one in other times. In addition, it shows a feeling of being sometimes slow and sometimes pretty fast. I wanted to express and feel with viewers something unlimited that is not just in one field, but can show the infinitiveness of the world with the lines in my paintings. The lines in my work are expressed in a repetitive manner with another line piled on the initial line. One line has been drawn first on canvas, and then I cover all over the initial line a color which will be the background. After that, the layers of lines applied on the initial one appear to be totally different from the first layer. I think that the deep space with various layers shows that it is possible to experience a space that transcends a two-dimension world through painting. Lines and colors provide images with a new potential by meeting one another freely and creating unexpected forms. When expressing lines in my work, I follow the flow of unconsciousness, but I believe that unconscious gestures are distinguishable from being messy: the intuitive gestures of unconsciousness are not so much confusing as consistent. The harmony of opposities, consciousness and unconsciousness, is what I am trying to show in my paintings. I wish my work to be a medium of the communication between a visible world and an invisible one.

Growing up in Korea, Kim found art quite naturally. She was a quiet child who enjoyed reading, drawing, calligraphy, and other peaceful activities. After graduating from Seoul Women’s University with a BFA she pursued an international education, completing an MA at Nottingham Trent University in the UK, then an MFA at New York’s Pratt Institute. Each place and experience has informed her creative process. Kim’s work, which is made up of lines that follow the flow of her unconscious mind, has been shown in cities like New York, Chicago, Miami, and Seoul.
