About The Artwork
In this work, elements of prehispanic themes and iconography are appropriated, including a ceramic Aztec head piece, and both the Jaguar and the Moth as aspects or messengers of death. Sepia Ink hand drawings in pen and quill, are integrated with photography of metal work on a catholic church door in Madrid Spain, and colorized digitally, attempting to reach a reflection on the omnipresence and inevitability of death both for individual and civilizations. As a historian and art historian, prehispanic cultures and art, and the perception of time, are some of my main subjects, and those interests are reflected in this series that I have entitled Archaeopunk, name that plays with the ideas of appropriation of archaeological heritage, subversion, temporality, and anachronism.
