Joanne Proctor's practice is informed by addressing concepts of nature and human identity; concerned with a curiosity and striving for the understanding of life - exploring worlds within worlds and the relationship between the mind (consciousness and the unconscious), body and the land (or environment). Many of the interweaving and complex aspects within her practice include identity, memory, origins, truth, time, change and mortality; and are often portrayed with a fragile quality or enigmatic and sometimes intimidating or surreal characteristics. Such works are driven by our need as humans to question and find meaning in life. Psychological and spiritual aspects often feature, with many works having symbolic meaning.
The concept of time is inherent in Proctor's working processes, which include painting, drawing, hand-stitching as a form of drawing and collage, created through highly repetitive actions.
