I am an artist and writer specializing in painting and illustration.
My works reflect on the struggle between the need to distance ourselves from our animalistic, primitive nature (or dominate it), and the inherent desire for contact with it.
Layers upon layers of marble dust, sand and natural resin build upon each other in an attempt to 'grow' from the canvas. Primitive, naturalistic forms, rough but delicate, struggle to erode and compartmentalize the surface, while subtle interventions of line, even broken, convey a presence of being.
The layering provides a history, a 'landscape' to look upon. At the same time, the act of 'cutting' or removing matter in a deliberate way demonstrates the real-time act of making and betrays the presence of the artist.
