Artist Recognition

An MRI scan penetrates and reveals a virtual rendering of the body and allows us to see an alternative topography of our bodies. MRI, or other radiographies, reveals the truth beneath the surface and makes visible what the skin tries to conceal. This depersonalised figure, with no site, or sight, of recognition exposes us to the perfection of her flesh, viscera and bones. Only on the outside, upon the skin, does she become subject to the social gaze and scrutinised for any imperfections. This work is of an obese female, and around the 'normal' form of the perfect body resides the cross-sections her cascading rolls of fat. In the mechanics and construction the body is truly beautiful and awe-inspiring but through the social gaze it becomes subject to so much scrutiny and tyranny. The MRI acts as means to greatly interrogate the body, to look at the body in a way not possible to the human eye as it minutely surveys. But really the technology is indifferent, it is us who critiques and judges. I chose textiles and then in particular cross-stitches (nearly 30,000 stitches make this life-size work) as I felt it mimiced the pixel. I saw a journey of the body being converted into digital data and then using my hands - my body - I turned the image back into life - size. Textiles are ubiquitous, imbued with corporeal knowingness with an intimate relationship with them throughout our lives, touch is an integral role to this relationship and this piece works on not just a visual level but a tactile and haptic one. hooks, thread and red linen
