About The Artwork

Every sculpture is individually drawn, sculpted and signed by the artist. No two pieces are the same. For the most effective and delightful result, suspend the sculpture against the wall with strong single-source lighting above, to create a clear dark shadow-drawing. Alternatively, make it interactive by using the torchlight from a mobile phone and directing it at an angle on the sculpture. When the torch moves, the shadow will move, creating an animated and unique 'shadow-drawing'. The transparent nature of the chosen materials is therefore an important aspect, together with using light and shadow in creating ambiguity. The nature of consciousness and our reality are aspects of science and spirituality that continually drive my research and provide conceptual substance for the work. I want people to have fun with their perception of being human. Our bodies are limited to existing in three physical dimensions, but what might we look like and what can our bodies do if we were not stuck in three dimensions? Inspired by Plato’s allegory of the cave, and Rudolf Steiner’s theory that we are beings of at least six dimensions I also want to communicate the idea of shifting dimensions. The figures drawn onto the surface of the plastic began life on a flat, two-dimensional plane. By moulding and curving the plastic it acquired a third dimension, contorting the figures and changing their aspect. The line drawing, however, still only exists on the two-dimensional surface and will never inhabit the third dimension. With light, the shadow-drawings that emerge add another dimension to the work, blurring the lines between where the sculpture ends and the shadows begin, much like the ambiguity that currently exists at the boundary between consciousness and brain.

Mona Choo is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work is driven by her long-term research into the topic of consciousness. Her scientific and metaphysical interest in the subject have led to an unusual approach to her work, where theories of quantum mechanics and multi-dimensions, sacred geometry and plenty of self-reflection come together to inform much of her practice. Choosing to focus on her creative process without a clear end- product in sight is often how Mona embarks on new work. This liberates her from any attachment to an outcome and instead, allows her to freely experiment with combining techniques and exploring materials with the aim of achieving the most affective way for the audience to experience the concept. Mona holds a Masters in Art & Science from Central St Martins, UK. She was awarded the International Print Artist-in-Residence at the Victoria & Albert Museum, UK, in 2009. Her work is in private and corporate collections in Europe, the USA, Asia and Australia, and in the permanent collection of the Singapore Art Museum. She has exhibited widely in the UK, USA, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia. She was a finalist for the 2018 national Tom Bass Prize for Figurative Sculpture in Australia. In 2021, Mona completed an artist residency at Tanglin Trust International School where she created a 4m wide site-specific installation, and sold out of her sculptures in a group exhibition in Singapore titled The Call of the Sea.
