About The Artwork

(Price is for the complete series of 12 + 1) This work is a group of imagined past/future structures that as a whole infers the temple, or refers to ancient buildings, and implies the presence of the ancient in a playful way, exploring metaphysical abstract art that plays in a space between painting and sculpture. The complete series of 12 is made out of 14,880 1.5" square blocks. Each pyramid is built with 1,240 blocks and each block is hand painted in one colour from a palette of 12 colours. Each pyramid has the same abstract pattern of coloured blocks on all 4 sides. Using 12 different patterns there are 12 unique pyramids. There is a 1/2" space between each block so not only can the pattern be seen to continue inside the pyramid but light from the opposite side is also visible. The specific geometric pattern outside and through each pyramid provides a monumentality and presence that scale provides in larger real-life versions in Egypt or Mexico. The monumental in miniature, if you will. Each pyramid measures 22.5" high and 29.5" wide, which I believe is an intimate and accessible dimension. None of the blocks are glued in place. To exhibit this work requires the blocks to be stacked each time, in a way similar to Tibetan sand paintings that are painstakingly made on location and then destroyed. With this project the blocks will be used again to make the same patterns for the same pyramids in other locations. I like the slightly precarious state of the blocks which are easily disassembled to be slowly reassembled another time. Building each pyramid out of 1,240 blocks is laborious and time consuming, but I see it as a way to slow time, which is how I believe this work should be viewed in its built state - slowly. Over the last 36 years that I've been painting and exhibiting I have been trying to make slower and slower art. I think it's amazing that an art work is capable of slowing time as if art were a technology. While the work begins with a concept it finishes with a percept. This work is ultimately about a different perception of time. To perceive this work requires the viewer to intuitively enter the work, and the experience may even be physical. I am exploring the retrieval of this approach to art making. Another aspect of this work is its relationship to Mu in Japanese Zen; the Hollow in Tao; the Void in Western metaphysics; Ein Sof in Jewish mysticism; or the space between notes in music. Notions explored include the unknown - as opposed to the knowable; the undefined object that refers rather than exemplifies; an intervening object that is not even recognizable as “sculpture” per se, but rather a new concept that leads the viewer beyond thought to an anti- materialistic language beyond “art”.
