Priority Shipping Sculpture

Under the new implications of digital culture, art has evolved to comply with technology and the web. The contemporary distribution of art is facilitated by a capitalist model of production. This model operates when a private owner distributes an item in a market economy for capital, or profit. In this system the artist is the private laborer who produces art in exchange for profit. This traditional model has controlled the art market for hundreds of years. However, the value of contemporary works is now ascertained through media dispersion. Dispersion, immediately effects the availability of an artists work and thus it’s value. This universal availability of a work of art is now underscored by its freedom to its audience. When the work enters the consumer market, now held online, the work is archived along side billions of other data entries. The work therefore exists along side mp3 files, .doc files, etc. The once unique and auric work is diluted and held by an infinite archive that reduces its idiosyncrasy. The web has forever changed our thinking of accessibility, and has created a culture that is more dispersed than ever before. Imposing a culture that has shaped our global landscape, the web has become a ubiquitous presence that has a collective experience across geographic locations. The open sharing domain has simultaneously shaped a space for public communication but has also invaded privacy. Challenging the boundaries of privacy, the open source medium has permanently changed our lexicon and relation to the world. In addition to invisible demarkations of a globalized society, the USPS and others have continued to create a tangible service that tracks the global expansion of our daily lives. I have made a series of counterfeit United States Postal Service Priority Postal boxes and envelopes. I have reprinted the boxes with the exact information that exists on the official boxes, but have alphabetized each line of text and thus, re-mixed, re-organized, and re-dispersed the information. I have kept the messenger, but removed the message. The boxes will be for sale, and will be mailed through the official USPS mail. I will mediate the transaction, and send the boxes to the customers destination of choice. The subsequent shipping process will stamp the packages with marks of global dispersion. The work will be complete when the packages arrive to the desired address.
