About The Artwork
‘Lift Off’ began its existence in a wood pile. As I was collecting wood for the stove, I noticed a chunk of oak whose freshly split interior was like silk. It had a stain of grey along its side- as if a Zen monk, practicing his daily meditative brush work, had left behind his mark. Like ‘Nautilus’ weightless ballasts, it holds paradoxes- the oak log has heft, yet it also has wings and emanates light. ‘Lift Off ‘ is an example of the bricoleur Claude Levi-Strauss refers to, who creates with whatever is at hand, and respects that meaning is an organic shifting essence.

Being an artist was a given in my family, one in which my mother and grandfather were both committed artists. I spent every summer of my youth on the shores of Bois Blanc Island, a pristine jewel that would eventually inform and inspire my work. Currently I am focusing on wooden assemblages which are constructed of various woods and found objects. They are in preparation for three upcoming invitational shows.
