About The Artwork

Wood construction made of Citrus, Poplar, Beefwood and Rose Gum. All but the Poplar were woods acquired through "Urban Timbering" The piece has a 3/4 inch mounting panel with prefab keyholes for hanging in four different orientations. The panel is offset from the edge of the piece by several inches, making the piece "float" on the wall.

I didn't set out to be an "eco-artist" but that is the avenue my newer works have taken. These works are made mostly from wood that has been acquired by way of "urban timbering." This involves taking down dead or unwanted trees in an urban environment and milling them up for use in my art, thus circumventing wood that was acquired by way of deforestation I'm very lucky to live an area that can support the cultivation of many native and exotic species of trees that are the sources of many common hardwoods. Even better, I use woods that are very uncommon, many of which have unique colors and characteristics that wouldn't be desirable in cabinetry but perfect for my art. I've created a blog that chronicles my conquests of wood - http://urbantimerbing.tumblr.com The product is a series of hard-edge abstractions that are reminiscent of painters like Frank Stella, Harvey Quaytman and Greg Bogin. However, instead of using paint, my palette - and canvas - is wood. The natural colors and figures in the wood serve as an inspiration for the abstract configurations. It may sound silly, but the wood tells me what to do. Sometimes in a cerebral way and sometimes more literally by breaking.
