Green Woodpecker. Volatiles collection. ‘Yaffle’ and ‘Rain bird’ were English folk names given to the Green Woodpecker because they have a laughing call said to herald rain. John Aubrey, a 16th Century English antiquarian, noted that the Green Woodpecker was used by the druids for divination and stated that 'to this day the country people do divine of raine by their cry'. I am fascinated by the shapes of our feathered friends in flight, soaring, gliding & diving with the wind. The Green Woodpecker is created entirely by hand, with each feather made from a mix of reclaimed materials. This piece is part of a series of birds created for the Volatiles collection. Four centuries ago, volatile was a general term referring to birds or other flying creatures such as butterflies.
