About The Artwork

This was a part of a popular series I did that took forms I found in nature such as seed pods, nuts, and flowers and I morphed them, conceptually with man made forms. Here, the "double hulled" refers to the hull of a nut and also the hull of a boat. With its bilateral symmetry, the work takes on a surprising anthropomorphic twist. The series as whole draws a thread connection between all of these forms: natural, man-made and human. The sculpture is a hollow welded steel construction with a unique patina process and wax finish.

I am a New York Artist who does sculpture, works on paper and photographic work. My work focuses on specific forms that have strong symbolic meaning, either to me personally or to the culture at large. Through manipulation of context my work examines underlying contradictions that I find in these symbols, either via my personal experience or observations of the world around me. Often, the symbols from one distinct series merge with another in the way that the events of one's life seamlessly connect to one another. The landscape and rural culture of Upstate New York informs my work with a seductive melancholia. Underlying all of the work is an autobiographical search for personal meaning. Most recently I have been creating ephemeral interventions in the landscape and using photography to document the process. I use a broad range of processes and materials such as steel, wood, photography, cement, mold making and bronze. I let the ideas dictate the medium and maintain a broad working vocabulary so that the expression of my ideas is not limited by a narrow approach.
