About The Artwork
Letters carved into a Victorian English house brick, and painted of-white. Text from Ezra Pound, Cantos I have worked for most of my life as a calligrapher and letter carver. I have always been fascinated by the many different ways in which our alphabet can be expressed. Letters can shout, sing or whisper. Italics can dance lightly across the page, or heavily carved Roman capitals can issue solemn authority. There are so many voices. In an on-running personally motivated project, extracts from great literature have been carved into humble house bricks. It contrasts man's and womankind’s basic need for shelter, with his and her need to think beyond the ordinary and express their more subtle thoughts through language.

My paintings are mainly of fruits and vegetables. I set them out with order and geometry to present a vivid colour experience. I love the ordinary everyday things in life and show them in a different way for a fresh look at them. I aim to elevate the mundane. The paintings are supplemented by ink drawings on paper which explore themes of three dimensional space and receding surfaces. For most of my life I have worked as calligrapher and letter carver. Some examples of my lettering work are shown here, in which extracts from the literary greats are carved into humble house bricks. I also show some other paintings including my painted renditions of Fontana's slashed canvases. I live and work in the city of Canterbury, UK
